Rosoku-Jima (Candle Island)
The icon of Dogo Island is a candle in the sea. Candle Island, also known as Rosoku-jima, is a narrow spire of rock located in the Sea of japan, rising more than 20 meters vertically out of the water about 500 meters off the coast of Dogo, the largest of the Oki Islands. When the sun sets and aligns in such a way that it rests on top of the rock, it creates the illusion of a candle.
Candle Island, along with Dogo Island and the Oki Island archipelago, is mostly made up of volcanic rock. The landscape is characterized by steep, craggy cliffs and strangely shaped formations. The archipelago is home to over 180 islands, with the majority of them being uninhabited.
To reach Candle Island, visitors can access it via Saigo Port on Dogo Island, which is the main island of the Oki Islands. Ferries from the mainland provide transportation to Dogo Island. Additionally, the area can be accessed by air through Oki Airport on Dogo Island, with flights available from Itami Airport in Osaka and Izumo Airport in Izumo.
Although there is no public transportation to Candle Island, the tourist office in Saigo or your hotel or guesthouse on Dogo Island can arrange transportation and meal times to fit the sunset schedule. Cruises to Candle Island run daily from April to October, depending on sea conditions.
The coastline of Dogo Island is truly majestic and offers a colorful and scenic experience. It is part of the Daisen-Oki National Park and is also recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark. The rugged and magnificent coastline is a sight to behold.
One of the best places to view Candle Island is from Ojirobana Park, which has a clifftop viewing point. From here, you can see the island from a higher vantage point. There is also a path that leads down to a cove where you can get a closer look at the island. However, to witness the stunning view of the setting sun “lighting the candle,” you will need to take a boat.
A couple of hours before sunset, a fleet of small boats departs from the fishing villages of Fukuura or Akasaki, weather permitting. Many of these boats are used for fishing, and travelers can sit on the open decks as they make their way up the coast. The route takes you past magnificent towering cliffs, sea caves, and inlets with pinnacles of rock and cliffs of different colors. As you round a headland, Candle Island comes into view. The captain will then bring you back to Candle Island and shut off the engines, allowing you to witness the illuminating moment of sunset.

With its rugged coastline, volcanic rock formations, and stunning sunset views, it is truly a natural wonder worth exploring. Whether you choose to view it from Ojirobana Park or take a boat cruise, the experience of witnessing Candle Island is sure to leave a lasting impression.
